How to stay safe in Las Vegas?

Looking for any advice to increase safety in Las Vegas. Are there plenty of police on the strip and down town (and in between) to prevent muggings? I'm thinking decoy wallet and money belt. Since ATM fee's at casinos are high and there's no way to transfer money back and forth in and out of bank account, it's likely that people will find it necessary to walk around with more money than normal especially if they are on foot (no high rental car fees and overpriced rental insurance) and casino hopping. Any other ideas and knowledge of how safe Vegas is would be appreciated.
